Communications Operator

  • Salary range $18.49 – $24.01 per hour, depending on experience.
  • Applications are available online or by picking up in person at the Sheriff’s Office. Applicants must be 20 years of age or older, high school diploma or GED.
  • 12 hour shifts with occasional mandatory overtime. A thorough background investigation will be conducted and no serious prior criminal history on your record.

Employees in this classification will be trained to operate several types of communications equipment used in the Washington County Communications Center which include radios, NCIC, 911 Phones, and CAD (Computer Aided Dispatching).

The employee will use standard procedures for receiving and channeling phone calls and emergency and routine radio calls from officers and the public.

On assigned shifts, typical responsibilities for a Washington County Communications Operator Trainee include answering phone calls for law enforcement assistance, recording necessary information via a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Trainees work under close supervision in a stressful, fast-paced environment and the ability to multi-task (talk on phones/radio and enter data into the computer) is a critical skill.

The Communications Division operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. During training, employees will be rotated through all shifts.

Ability to speak and hear clearly and ability to read and understand verbal and written directions.

Previous dispatch experience preferred but not required
General knowledge of the geographical boundaries of Washington County and all cities within preferred but not required.
