Corrections

The Washington County Jail houses inmates arrested by the Blair Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Washington County Sheriff's Department, as well as those from Burt County, and other jurisdictions.

The Corrections Division is comprised of 10 civilian corrections officers, one Sergeant, one Jail Deputy, and two part-time court security officers. A Captain oversees operations of the Corrections Division. Washington County Jail operates 24 hours a day – 365 days a year.

Jail Facts

 

  1. Between 2009 and 2012, The Washington County Jail experienced a 103% increase in average daily inmate population.

  2. The 2011-2013 Fiscal Year average cost of meals was reduced to $1.90 with 31,000 meals served. Meals served does not reflect inmates released prior to Jail List counts (the actual figure is closer to 33,000 meals served).

  3.  Each year, the Corrections Division travels approximately 25,000 –to- 30,000 miles transporting prisoners from other jurisdiction to the Washington County Jail & transporting inmates to Nebraska State correctional facilities to serve their court ordered sentences.

  4.  In calendar year 2013, the Washington County jail received a total of $177,936.39 in revenue for housing prisoners for other jurisdictions.

  5. Washington County jail staff members are responsible for safely moving inmates to and from court an average of 3 - 4 days per week.

  6. Normally, inmates housed in this facility can serve up to one year in jail, however as recently as 2011 an inmate served 1 year & 10 Months (635) continuous days in our facility.

  7.  State & Federal guidelines require each inmate have the opportunity for 5 hours each week in recreation activities. In addition we are statutorily required to provide 3 meals each day that meet or exceed federal basic dietary guidelines, we also must provide basic medical & dental care, and provide for inmate religious opportunities & needs, etc...

  8.  Total operating budget for the Washington County Jail fiscal year 2012-2013 is $656,248.93.

Washington County Jail was originally designed for 17 beds, original square footage design has not changed. However, in 1998, double-bunks were placed in the housing units - against NJS (National Jail Standards) recommendations, creating additional imate capacity and overcrowding problems.

Industry standards recommend when a jail facility reaches 80% of capacity, it should be considered full, due to classification and segregation issues.
