The historic city of Fort Calhoun is just a short drive on Highway 75 north of Omaha, NE and has a population of 1,148 as of 2022.
Our history starts with Lewis & Clark, who stopped here for their first council with the Otoe & Missouria native tribes. William Clark wrote home that this “council on the bluff” would be an ideal spot for a military installation, and 15 years later, Fort Atkinson was established as the largest fort of its day, home to the 6th Infantry. Seasonal historic re-enactments can be enjoyed at Fort Atkinson, which highlights 1820’s military life.
Fort Calhoun was at the center of communities that welcomed famous mountain men, Mormon Pioneers, and early homesteaders to Nebraska. While you are here, visit the 1905 Frahm House and see the story of the Frahm Family, early Fort Calhoun pioneers. This lovely Victorian Home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is available for tours, group functions and afternoon teas by appointment.
